Apolonija Sustersic

Apolonija Sustersic was born in 1965 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In 1992 she graduated in architecture from the University of Ljubljana. She then attended the Rijsakademie of Fine Arts, Amsterdam from 1994 to 1995 and earned her doctorate at Lund University and the Malmö Academy of Art in Sweden. She has taught at the Royal University College of Fine Arts, Stockholm and currently at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Norway, where she directs the MFA Program: Art & Public Space. Her works and projects have been presented internationally in numerous exhibitions including Moderna Museet Stockholm, Sweden, Biennale 2, Berlin, Germany, Luxembourg City of Culture, Luxembourg, Moderna Galerija Ljubljana, Slovenia, De Appel Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Generali Foundation, Vienna, Austria, Art Museum, University of Memphis, USA, Tirana Biennale 3, Tirana, Albania, Muhka, Antwerp, Netherlands, Edinburgh International Festival, Great Britain, Bildmuseet, Umeå, Sweden, Galerie für Zeitgenossische Kunst, Leipzig, Germany, 12. Architecture Biennale, Venice, Italy and Artes Mundi 5, Gwangju Biennale, Korea. Apolonija Sustersic lives, teaches and works in Oslo.

As an architect and artist, Apolonija Sustersic focuses on the critical analysis of space. Beyond its real three-dimensional conditions, she investigates its social and political aspects as the closest area of life and overall social environment. Guided by social commitment, Sustersic conducts research in interdisciplinary collaboration with other architects, urban planners, curators, sociologists and the local population for visionary spatial solutions and places to live in the future. Participatory approaches are always part of her artistic strategy.
