Melitopoulos, Angela + Maurizio Lazzarato
Angela Melitopoulos was born in Munich in 1961. She studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Nam June Paik and received her Ph.D. from Goldsmith College, University of London. Melitopoulos has taught at various universities, including the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and the University of Potsdam, Germany, the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, Denmark. She shares text writing and film collaborations with sociologist and philosopher Maurizio Lazzarato.
Her film and video works have been screened internationally at film festivals including the Berlin International Film Festival, Germany; Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland; International Film Festival Rotterdam, Netherlands; European Media Art Festival (EMAF), Osnabrück, Germany. The artist participated in the 3rd Berlin Biennale, Berlin, Germany in 2004, the 7th Manifesta (M7), Trentino, South Tyrol, Italy in 2008 and documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany in 2017, and in group exhibitions including Centre Georges-Pompidou, Paris, France, Whitney Museum New York, USA, Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, Germany and Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Canada. Angela Melitopoulosh holds a professorship substitution at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe, Germany.
Maurizio Lazzarato was born in Italy, in 1955. Lazzarato studied at the University of Padua in the 1970s, where he was politically active in the neo-Marxist movement Autonomia Operaia. In the late 1970s, he left for France due to political persecution. A case against him were dropped in the 1990s. He is an independent sociologist and philosopher who researches immaterial labor, ontology of labor, cognitive capitalism, and "post-socialist" movements. Lazzarato is one of the co-founders of the post-operaist discourse on the transformation of "immaterial" and "cognitive" labor as a paradigm of the post-fordist societies of the West. He is the author of numerous articles on cinema, video and new technologies of image production and co-founder of the journal Multitudes. Since 1989 he has collaborated with Angela Melitopoulos on films, media art projects and numerous publications. He lives and works in Paris, France.
Angela Melitopoulos, together with Maurizio Lazzarato, analyzed the term "machinic animism" coined by Félix Guattaris in 2010 and explores issues such as contexts of forms of production of capitalism, political geography, migration, and more generally social processes and relations, working with political groups and networks in France, Italy, Turkey, and Germany.
