Artwork text

Exploration of the surroundings, exploration of the body, exploration of the surrounding body A person stands in the room with two body-mounted 8mm cameras, one dorsal (back), one frontal. When this person bends forward, one camera documents the ground, the other camera documents the sky, when the person bends sideways, both cameras document opposite side views, when he/she bends backwards, etc... Both projection surfaces, which have to overlap, can be covered by geometric signs such as circle, square, oblong, intersecting lines etc. and become recognizable in certain shots of the environment and their projection. It is an expansion of the room that goes beyond urban architecture and extends into nature. Obstacles and disturbances are encountered (one has to crawl through pipes, pits, and jump, hit obstacles head-on, lie on the ground, etc... These happenings are filmed simultaneously with a 16mm camera... Not only is something shown, the process of showing is also shown. Not only is something depicted, the process of depiction is also depicted. A sense of space that only film can create is conveyed: at the same time one can see oneself in the center of the room from the back and from up front, from below and from the outside. Not only are the surroundings explored by means of film, the exploration of the surroundings by means of the body are also shown by means of film (which is only possible in film and not literature, etc.) In this way, the surroundings also appear as a body, as an extension of the body, as an environmental body. Film combines opposite parts of the room, creating the spatial continuum of the body that cannot be immediately perceived. (VALIE EXPORT)
